MATERIALS
Argentium Silver
This is the type of sterling silver used in my pieces. Most pieces are made with recycled silver. Argentium contains 93.5% fine silver (92.5% is the defining characteristic of sterling silver). Argentium jewelry has better resistance to tarnishing than traditional sterling silver.
Karat Gold
All the gold purchased and used in my jewelry is recycled. Any gold scrap that is not used is melted down for reuse.
Gold Fill
This composite metal is used for some of the earring wires. It is made by bonding a thin layer of 14K gold onto brass. Gold fill generally has 100 times more gold than a gold plated object and is much more durable.
TECHNIQUES
Washi (和紙)
The word "washi" comes from wa meaning 'Japanese' and shi meaning 'paper'. The term is used to describe paper that is handmade from local, Japanese fibers, in a centuries old traditional manner. I incorporate this skillful and historic tradition into my work by embedding colorful and vibrant washi into resin to create beautiful motifs and textures. View all products made with washi here.
Keum boo
This ancient Korean technique means ‘attached gold’ and involves bonding 24K gold to silver. First, the top layers of copper and germanium are removed from the sterling silver, exposing a thin layer of pure (fine) silver. Thin sheets of 24K gold are then applied with 500-700F heat and pressure to bond the metals together. View all products made using the Keum boo technique here.
Granulation
This technique involves cutting tiny pieces of metal and using a flame to melt and shape them into granules or tiny balls. The process continues with fusing the balls onto another metal surface, creating a multidimensional aspect to the piece that catches the eye from all angles.
Reticulation
Reticulation is a technique applied to silver that creates valleys and ridges across the surface of the metal. The metal is heated at least five times to prepare it for the formation of the design, resulting in dramatic grooves and patterns across the surface of the jewelry.
